An Aroostook County family who is having a rough go of it, got the gift of 'Hope' from the Houlton Humane Society recently.

Makenna Ward, daughter of Kirk and Amy Ward, was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma in 2009 when she was just 23 months old. She’s now 6-years-old. Neuroblastoma is a form of cancer that occurs in infants and young children that accounts for approximately 6% of all cancers in children. She’s a fighter though! Get her full story here.

For the Ward family, this has been an uphill battle. Recently, Makenna’s Bone Marrow came back with clusters of disease. She returned to Boston for treatment and received stem cells last week. She is in great spirit.

In order to make Makenna and her family's journey a bit easier, the fine folks at the Houlton Humane Society waived the adoption fee on a puppy named Hope.

The United Vets Motorcycle Club has offered to pay for Hope's spay. Aroostook Milling has stepped up and has decided to donate food to the family for the puppy's entire life with the Wards!

I had a chance to speak with Heather Miller, the Executive Director at Houlton humane Society. Here's what she had to say.

This family has a long road ahead of them and HHS doesn't want them to have to worry about anything. Any donations of food, supplies and money for Hope would be greatly appreciated.

It's almost Christmas, and what better time to help a family as special as they are! Any donations can be dropped off at the shelter, mailed to PO Box 548, Houlton, ME 04730 or PayPal to animal @pwless.net.
