The top-seed Houlton girls pulled away from the No. 8 Foxcroft Academy Ponies in a Saturday night Class B quarterfinal at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

92.9 The Ticket reports the lower-seeded Ponies gave the Shires a scare, taking a 44-43 lead in the fourth quarter. Houlton was able to hang on to finish off Foxcroft 61-52.

Kolleen Bouchard led all scorers with 22 points. Aspen Flewelling added 13 for Houlton.

For Foxcroft, junior guard Kendra Ewer had 15 points and Grace Bickford had 12. Freshman Mackenzie Beaudry added 10 points.

Houlton is the defending state champion in Class C, but with reclassification, they are competing in Class B this year.

The Shiretowners were in Class B for many years, last winning a state B championship in 1991.
