The horse named after former UMaine Black Bear hockey player Gustav Nyquist has been installed as the favorite to win the 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday afternoon.

The post selection draw on Wednesday evening has the horse running out of 13 position for the race is currently a 3-1 favorite for the race.  Nyquist has yet to lose a race in seven attempts and recently won the Florida Derby on April 2nd.

The horse’s owner J. Paul Reddam is a former professor at Cal State and is an avid hockey fan, resulting in him choosing the name to represent the former Hobey Baker finalist.

Other betting favorites for the race include Exaggerator (8-1), Gun Runner, and Mohaymen (both 10-1).  The race is set to begin at 6:34 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, so grab a big hat and a mint julep and enjoy the race!
