Portland's John Hayes knew he had to get 'up and down' on the 18th hole at Bangor Muni if he wanted to win the Downeast Metro Golf Tournament. And that's just what he did.

Hayes putted from the fringe and then nailed a short putt to birdie the hole and win the tourney by one shot over Lance Bernier. He shot a 1-under 70 Sunday afternoon after shooting a a 1-over 72 at Kebo Valley in Bar Harbor on Saturday. His 2-day total was 142.

Lance Bernier from Lincoln was the clubhouse leader most of the day after posting a 5-under par 66 Sunday morning. His 2-day total was 143.

Andrew Slattery finished in 3rd place. Pittsfield's Eric Dugas was 4th. His brother, Gavin, the defending champion, finished in a tie for 15th.

Carrie Langevin won the women's division with a total score of 167.

The Downeast Metro tourney is now three years old and is the first of summer's big golf tournaments in Maine, drawing many of the top amateurs to the competion.
