The spring of 2004, the price of gas began climbing and continued up for almost 5 years. It's taken nearly 12 years to drop back below the $2 mark in Aroostook County, but Wednesday saw a dime a gallon average drop and many service stations posting $1.97  for the first time since May of 2004.

Gas prices had dropped below the $2 mark in other parts of Maine over the previous few days. Bangor, for instance, is down to $1.89. The statewide average mid-week was $1.95, down from $3.75 a gallon in just the past 18 months. The previous statewide high was $4.15 a gallon in early 2008.
