Rene Michael Gerard was wanted on an outstanding warrant in connection with an alleged sexual assault last Wednesday in Fredericton.

Police had released a photo of Gerard early Tuesday and warned the public not to approach him as he was considered a threat to public safety.

Alycia Morehouse, spokesperson for the Fredericton Police Force, said that an arrest team was deployed to the Nackawic area Tuesday in an attempt to locate Gerard.

Members of the Major Crime Unit, Emergency Response Team and Police Dog team were conducting surveillance in a residential area in Nackawic when the suspect attempted to flee a residence around 2 p.m.

"Following a brief foot pursuit, officers were able to apprehend him without incident," Morehouse said.

Gerard is facing several charges, including forcible confinement, sexual assault, assault, uttering threats, breach of probation, and breach of an undertaking.
