AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine is inviting everyone in the state to participate in a free fishing weekend on the Pine Tree State's thousands of miles of waterways.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is hosting the free fishing weekend on Saturday and Sunday. Anyone can fish for free without a license, with the exception of people who have had their licenses suspended or revoked.

Maine has almost 6,000 lakes and more than 30,000 miles of rivers and streams. Game wardens are cautioning fishermen to check ice conditions before attempting to ice fish.

Popular game fish in the state include landlocked salmon, brook trout and rainbow smelt. Normal rules, such as bag and possession limits, still apply on the free weekend.
