Former Perham Town Clerk Accused of Theft
A Caribou woman who recently served as town clerk in Perham has been charged with felony theft, after an investigation revealed thousands of dollars in missing funds.
Forty-year-old Connie Theriault has been charged with Class B Theft, according to a press release Wednesday from Aroostook County Sheriff Darrell Crandall.
Theriault was town clerk in Perham for approximately three years until she was let go on April 1, 2015. Perham town officials contacted the Sheriff’s Office on April 2 to report their suspicions that Theriault had been stealing money from the town. Prior to this, an auditor had reported areas of concern, which caused town officials to dig deeper.
Over the past 2 months, the Sheriff’s Office reviewed hundreds of pages of documents in the possession of the town as well as records obtained from financial institutions. Deputies also interviewed a number of witnesses before issuing Theriault a summons to appear in court.
The town of Perham, its auditors and Sheriff’s Deputies have identified over $39,000 that is unaccounted for, Crandall said.
Theriault will appear in Caribou District Court on August 6.
The case is now in the hands of the Aroostook County District Attorney. No additional details are being released at this time.
