A fire Monday afternoon that left a family homeless just outside Meductic, New Brunswick remains under investigation.

Firefighters from Meductic, Woodstock and Canterbury were called to the blaze at 852 Benton Road in Benton shortly after 2 p.m.

Woodstock Fire Chief Ricky Nicholson tells us the home was fully involved when crews arrived. Damage to the house was extensive, Nicholson said, and it is most likely "beyond repair."

The four family members were not home at the time, and there were no injuries.

The couple, daughter-in-law and granddaughter are staying with relatives for now, according to Dan Bedell of the Canadian Red Cross.  The agency was assisting the family with emergency purchases including food, clothing, blankets and other essentials.

Monday's fire is apparently of suspicious origin. The RCMP and the Fire Marshal's Office are investigating to determine the cause.
