Fire Destroys Phil’s Florist and Greenhouses in Caribou
Fire swept through Phil’s Florist and Greenhouses in Caribou Thursday night, destroying a business that had been in operation for 40 years.
The Caribou Fire Department responded to the fire on Washburn Street around 9 p.m. According to Caribou Fire Chief Scott Susi, a passing motorist called to report the fire after spotting flames and smoke coming from the two-story florist shop.
More than 50 firefighters from Caribou, Washburn, Fort Fairfield and Limestone worked in subzero temperatures to bring the intense blaze under control. The Presque Isle Fire Department provided mutual aid at the Caribou station. There were no injuries. Firefighters remained on scene until about 1 a.m. Friday.
The cause of the blaze is not known at this time, according to Chief Susi. The Maine Fire Marshall's Office is investigating. The business was a total loss.
Phil's Florist and Greenhouses first opened in 1974 and is owned by Caribou residents David and Patty Corriveau .
