‘Frankenstorm’ is becoming an ‘extra - tropical cyclone’ - a rare phenomenon. Hurricane Sandy has been named the ‘perfect storm’ because it resembles a 1991 storm that hit the shores of New York state, killing 13 people. Though weather experts can’t predict yet where exactly Sandy will hit, they advise that people should have an emergency evacuation plan ready.

The Maine Disaster Center suggest that people should be prepared to:

  1. Use a NOAA radio or battery operated radio for weather updates
  2. Secure your home by closing windows
  3. Secure any outside lawn furniture: because hurricanes cause high and strong winds and any object that is not secured can become dangerous.
  4. Unplug small appliances
  5. Turn off propane tank
  6. Make sure you evacuate large animals prior the hurricane
  7. Get a medical kit handy
  8. Put important documents in a safe place such as a lock box
  9. Fill in your car’s gas tank in case you have to evacuate your home

Noel Runyan from the National Weather Services office in Caribou said that Northern Maine will see some heavy rain, winds, 15 to 20 miles, but rather than that Mainers are safe.
