Embattled Superintendent Resigns Amid Nepotism Complaints

A Maine school superintendent has resigned amid complaints that he broke the district's nepotism policy by hiring his 23-year-old son.

District board chairwoman Rebecca Bowley said in a statement Monday that the severance agreement reached with Frank Sherburne will avoid a legal struggle and bring closure to the matter.

Sherburne was superintendent of School Administrative District 6. Parents and demonstrators began disrupting board meetings to protest the district's decision to not immediately discipline him following his son's hiring.

The hiring came to light after Sherburne's son was charged with sexually assaulting a student in another district. He left the district in March and was charged with sexual assault and sexual abuse of a minor.

Assistant superintendent Michael Roy will take over on an interim basis.
