Dolly Parton: ‘Christmas of Many Colors’ TV Movie Is ‘Very Emotional’

Dolly Parton is once again releasing a TV movie this holiday season. Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love, which follows 2015's Coat of Many Colors, shares even more of the country icon's life story -- and, this time around, in addition to serving as the film's executive producer and narrator, the 70-year-old will also make a cameo.

Christmas of Many Colors is based on a true story about a Christmas miracle that Parton and her family experienced when their lives were threatened due to an unexpected blizzard that left them stranded and without food. But the movie also offers some happier moments, giving viewers a further look into Parton's humble beginnings while highlighting her family's strength and resilience in spite of their meager surroundings.

"It’s very emotional. It’s like Emotions of Many Colors, because ... it makes me remember Mom and Daddy so well," Parton tells The Boot. "It’s precious in a way, but when it’s over, it’s like such a loss, on account that they’re still gone. But this is a way to have them always, and immortalize them.

"My brothers and sisters all love it, too," she adds, "and getting the chance to let them be presented in a good way -- I take a lot of pride in it, but it’s very emotional."

Parton's sister Stella also has a role in Christmas of Many Colors, which makes the film even more special for Parton.

"It opened up places in me I didn’t know," she admits. "I cried my eyes out just working on it. When we were writing it, and then when the kids act it, and then when we see all these scenes come together ... We had a lot of laughs doing it.

"It’s become like a real family thing," Parton continues. "My brothers and sisters were so happy with the last one, I think they’re going to really like this one."

Although reliving certain moments of her life was painful for Parton, she hopes that her story can serve as an inspiration to others.

"One of the reasons I wanted to do this now is because I’m missing family, faith-based shows, like Little House on the Prairie, the Waltons; they were great shows," Parton shares. "It showed about the struggles of family, and the love, and the things you go through. I know myself, I really miss that ...

"Plus, people are interested in my childhood," she adds. "They’ve heard me talk about it, and they always respond well. I thought, ‘Well, if I’m special, I’d like them to see why; I’d like them to see the people that I came from ... the special people that made me who I am and what I am.’"

Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love, which also stars Jennifer Nettles, Ricky Schroder and Gerald McRaney, will premiere on NBC on Nov. 30 at 9PM ET. The film will also be available for DVD purchase on Dec. 20.
