Nick Derba has been named the interim head coach for UMaine baseball for the 2016-17 season as Steve Trimper departs Orono for Stetson University.

Derba is in his fourth year at Maine and was named associate head coach a year ago.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to be the head coach at Maine for the spring of 2017," said Derba. "From here on out, its business as usual. Our goals do not change as we will continue to work and build a victorious path towards the America East Championship. I appreciate the opportunity Karlton Creech has granted me and wish the best of luck to Coach Trimper."

Derba played his college ball at Manhatten College, two years under then coach Steve Trimper. He was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2007 and spent six seasons in their minor league system.

UMaine athletic director Karlton Creech says a national search will be conducted after the season to find the next coach.
