Crandall Returns to MDEA as Northern Commander

Darrell Crandall, who retired last month after more than 3 years as Aroostook County Sheriff, has been named the northern commander for the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.  

Crandall was sworn-in Wednesday at the Maine Department of Public Safety offices in Augusta, according to spokesman Steve McCausland. He succeeds Peter Arno who recently retired from law enforcement after a career with the Bangor Police Dept. and the MDEA.

MDEA Director Roy McKinney said Crandall is one of Maine’s most experienced drug investigators and will now oversee agents in the northern half of the state.

Crandall previously served 24 years with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.   He joined as a drug agent, then supervised field operations for 12 years and finished his last 8 years in the unit as Division Commander

Crandall, who lives in Houlton, was elected sheriff in November 2014. His Chief Deputy at the Aroostook Sheriff’s Office, Shawn Gillen, another MDEA veteran, will serve as acting sheriff until Gov. Paul LePage appoints a replacement.
