• He was a guitarist and singer for Pure Prairie League from 1976 to 1980 and a backup singer and guitarist for Rodney Crowell from 1980 to 1984.
• He had minor roles in the1994 movies Maverick and 8 Seconds.
•  He is well known for his charity work and received the CMA's 2006 Humanitarian Award.
• He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007.
•  He became a full-time member of the western swing band the Time Jumpers in 2010.
