At Sunday night's (May 1) American Country Countdown Awards, Chris Janson performed his breakthrough single “Buy Me a Boat,” a perfect song for the working man.

“They call me a redneck, white trash and blue collar / Lordy mama, I could change all that if I had a couple million dollars / I hear money is the root of all evil and you can’t fit a camel through the eye of a needle / I guess that’s true, but it could buy me a boat,” sang Janson, with his guitar and harmonica strapped on. That harmonica came out blazing for a rousing, crowd-pleasing solo toward the end of the song, crescendo-ing to a slow burn at the end.

"Buy Me a Boat," written by Janson and Chris DuBois, was a natural fit for the outdoorsy artist.

“The process was actually pretty easy. I like writing with Chris, and we hadn’t written that many songs together,” he told The Boot earlier this year. “"Buy Me a Boat” just came out of really nowhere: He had the hook line, and I had my little gut-string guitar that I always write on. Literally, the song, he would probably attest to this, too, sort of just fell out.”

The title track of Janson’s debut album, “Buy Me a Boat,” topped the iTunes Country Charts and has since sold more than 800,000 copies. It was certified platinum in December of 2015.
