The University of Maine Basketball teams split their conference openers with Vermont with the women winning 61-42 while the men lost 90-72. Meanwhile the Husson women got a win at the buzzer.

After holding a 1 point lead after the first quarter the Maine women outscored Vermont 12-4 in the second to grab a halftime lead they would never relinquish.

Sigi Koizar paced the Bears with a double-double by pouring in 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Mikaela Gustaffson and Bella Swan also scored in double figures with Gustaffson netting 15 points and Swan 12. The Bears were aidind by controlling the boards against a much smaller Catamount team with a 47-31 rebounding advantage.


In the men's game the Bears and Cats played a tight game that was tied at halftime at 40. Vermont then picked up the defense and held Maine to just 32 points in the second half and cruised to the 90 72 win. Trae Bell-Haynes led the Cats with a game high 27 points on 10-14 shooting form the field.

The Bears got 13 points from Till Gloger in the loss and another 12 form Devine Eke. Maine falls to 4-10 with the loss.

The Husson women pulled out a dramatic 65-64 win over the University of Southern Maine. With the Eagles down by a point Chandler Guerrette drained a shot with 1.7 seconds left to get the win for Husson. Guerrette finished with 15 points while Kenzie Worcester led the 6-3 Eagles with 16 points.

The win over USM is the first at home over the Huskies since 1992. Husson will swing back to North Atlantic Conference play Saturday at Maine Maritime.
