King, now in his second year as a United States Senator from Maine, made the announcement on Wednesday at the University of Maine in Orono. I had the chance to ask him about his endorsement when he visited local businesses in Ashland on Thursday.

Listen to Senator King talk about why he chose to endorse Emily Cain:

An independent member of the Senate, King has caucused with the Democrats since taking his seat in 2013. As a popular former governor, King's endorsement may help Cain win independent voters in Maine's largely rural and more conservative 2nd district.

Emily Cain, currently serving her first term in the Maine State Senate, previously served four terms in the Maine House of Representatives from Orono, and also served as the house co-chair of the powerful appropriations committee. She faces Republican Bruce Poliquin, a former State Treasurer, in the general election next month.
