On the morning of September 26, 2016 Trooper Nick Casavant responded to a residence on the Griffin Ridge Road in Mapleton. Maine State Police say 41-year-old David Sowers, Jr. was found dead inside the home. Evidence at the scene indicated Sowers’ death was possibly the result of an overdose of heroin and fentanyl. The State Medical Examiner’s Office later ruled that to be the case.

On Thursday, April 6, after a lengthy investigation, 29-year-old Trevor M. Tompkins of Ashland was indicted by a grand jury in Aroostook County on a charge of Aggravated Unlawful Trafficking of Schedule Drugs Resulting in Death, a Class A crime in relation to Sowers’ death. Tompkins is currently being held at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham on a separate charge.

State Police worked with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency throughout the investigation.
