Five Sent to Maine Medical Center After Terrible Tractor Trailer Accident on Maine Turnpike
An accident involving four tractor trailers and a passenger car on the Maine Turnpike early Saturday morning sent five people to the hospital.
Maine State Police responded to the multi-vehicle crash at around 3:50 a.m. in the southbound lanes in Falmouth. The preliminary investigation indicates that one tractor trailer jack-knifed, causing a chain reaction of crashes.
The four tractor trailers slammed into the guardrail with three of the rigs ending up facing the opposite direction. The car landed in the median. Two of the tractor trailer units rolled over, losing their cargo and causing major damage.
All five drivers involved in the crash were transported to Maine Medical Center for treatment. Amazingly, none of the injuries was considered serious, but one of the truckers had to be extricated from the wreckage of his cab.
Speeds on the Turnpike had been lowered to 45 mph shortly after midnight due to icy conditions. Maine State Troopers shut down the southbound section of the highway near Exit 63 following Saturday's crash.
Police across the state say icy roads have made travel treacherous. Many plow trucks have been having difficulty getting sand and salt on the roads until temperatures warm up.
